Leaning Tower of Pisa: An Iconic Imperfection
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the campanile of the city's cathedral. The tilt of the structure is due to a poorly laid foundation during its construction in 1173. Up until a decade long restoration project started in 1990, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees. Today, it tilts at about 4 degrees, putting the top of the tower nearly 13 ft (4 m) over from where it would be if the tower were totally vertical.
