Outdoor Adventures in Bariloche

Perched on the shores of the vast Nahuel Huapi Lake in Patagonia, Bariloche is considered by many to be Argentina's adventure capital. A diverse collection of lakes, forests, mountains, and glaciers mean adventure for just about every type of visitor. These are some of our favorite outdoor activities in Bariloche.

Hiking and Trekking
Patagonia is famous the world over for its trekking and hiking trails, and visitors with as little as a day to spare can get in on the adventure. Spend the morning hiking to a high point on Cerro Lopez, one of Bariloche’s most magnificent mountains, or opt for a short hike to Ventisquero Negro glacier near Cerro Tronador (the highest mountain in the Andean Lake District) to hear the sounds of calving icebergs.

Skiing
Bariloche’s Cerro Catedral ski resort, situated just outside San Carlos de Bariloche, attracts skiers with its deep powder and impressive backcountry terrain. While advanced skiers will certainly find a challenge here, the slope is also suitable for newbies, who can opt for a ski lesson from the resort’s instructors.

Boating and Kayaking
It would be a shame to leave Bariloche without spending some time on the numerous lakes of the region. Travelers have several options for doing so, including a catamaran ride to the Quetrihue Peninsula, sightseeing cruise across Nahuel Huapi Lake to Puerto Blest and its Los Cantaros Waterfall, or a private sailing expedition around Tristeza Sound. Those craving a more active aquatic adventure in the Lake District can choose a full day of kayaking on Mascardi Lake within Nahuel Huapi National Park instead.

Ziplining
Cerro Lopez Mountain sets the scene for one of Bariloche’s most adrenaline-fueled activities, ziplining along a 4,920-foot-long (1,500-meter) course through the trees of Nahuel Huapi National Park. From this bird’s-eye perspective, it’s possible to see Moreno Lake and Cerro Otto.

Horseback Riding
Argentina has a rich history of horseback riding, and Patagonia is no exception. Setting out from a traditional estancia (ranch), horseback riding tours take riders of all ability levels, including first timers, through the pristine landscapes of the Andes foothills.
