3 Days in Bavaria: Suggested Itineraries

Blessed with some of Europe’s most romantic scenery, Bavaria is the kind of place you wouldn’t want to leave, but for those with only three days to spare, here are a few ideas for what to include on your itinerary.

Day 1: Munich
The state capital makes the obvious starting point for a trip around Bavaria and there’s plenty to do in Munich. Enjoy a walking tour of the city, taking in the landmark Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) and Peterskirche church; climb the tower of the medieval Frauenkirche Cathedral; hit the shops on Kaufingerstrasse and in the Viktualienmarkt; or check out one of the city’s many acclaimed museums or art galleries. If you’re not lucky enough to be in town for the annual Oktoberfest extravaganza or the atmospheric Christmas markets, you can still enjoy the city’s party atmosphere at one of the many beer gardens or the legendary Hofbräuhaus beer hall.

Day 2: Explore the Bavarian Alps
Head south to the Bavarian Alps for a hike or drive around some of Germany’s most breathtaking mountain scenery. Stop off on the way at the famous Neuschwanstein and Linderhof castles, two of King Ludwig’s II’s most inspired creations. A great way to soak up the views is to drive around part of the German Alpine Road, a scenic tourist route running from Lake Constance to Berchtesgaden. Spend the night in the medieval hilltop town of Füssen.

Day 3: Romantic Road
Take a tour along the aptly named Romantic Road, Germany’s most iconic themed tourist trail running all the way from Füssen to Würzburg and serving up an enchanting panorama of mountaintop castles, timber-built villages and lush vineyards. You wouldn’t be able to do the entire road in one day, especially with so much to see along the way, but heading to the medieval city of Rothenburg takes in many of the highlights, including the walled city of Augsburg.
