Nightlife in Cairo

If you thought Cairo was lively during the day, wait until you experience the city at night. While predominantly Islamic, the Egyptian capital offers plenty of after-dark entertainment options and places to enjoy and adult libations. Here are some top tips for a night out in Cairo.

Dinner Cruises
A wonderful way to spend an evening, particularly for traveling couples, is to embark on a dinner cruise on the Nile River. Cruise options vary, but many offer live entertainment—like belly dancing or a folkloric performance similar to a whirling dervish—as well as stellar views of the Cairo skyline. Choose between an open buffet, set menu, or à la carte menu for dinner.

Bars and Discos
While alcohol isn’t a huge part of Cairo’s nightlife for locals, there are several places around town where the drinks are flowing after sundown. Traditional Egyptian bars, called cafeterias, are generally (if not officially) male-only. Western-style bars, where both men and women can go for a drink, can be a better option for travelers. Many upscale hotels have bars or nightclubs attached, and there are also a number of discos, jazz clubs, live music venues, pubs, and bars in Zamalek to choose from.

Belly Dancing
Belly dancing is a quintessentially Egyptian form of evening entertainment. Besides a dinner cruise, where belly dancers often perform during a meal, there are several other places around the capital where you can watch a performance. Egypt’s most famous belly dancers perform at the city’s 5-star hotels, and it’s usually a formal affair. For a more casual experience, several of the night spots on Al Haram Street have music and belly dancing, as do some of the city’s casinos.
