Ways to Celebrate Halloween in Europe

From the shadowy alleys of London to the forests of Transylvania, Europe has lots of spooky sites where you can get in the Halloween spirit. And while trick-or-treating is not quite as widespread here as it is in the United States, there are plenty of spine-tingling ways to celebrate Halloween, European-style—here are just a few ideas.

  • Visits France’s notorious burial sites during tours of the Paris Catacombs and Père Lachaise Cemetery.
  • Follow in the footsteps of notorious serial killers, such as Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd, on nighttime tours of England’s capital.
  • Descend beneath the streets to eerie underground chambers at the Amsterdam Dungeons in the Netherlands or Edinburgh Vaults in Scotland.
  • Attend Dracula-inspired Halloween festivities in Romania. Visit a late-night party at Bran Castle or a bash at the medieval citadel in Sighişoara, the supposed birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the real-life inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
  • Go ghost-hunting around the misty passageways and blackened canals of Venice, Italy.
  • Follow a lantern-carrying guide through the haunted alleys and little-explored courtyards of Stockholm’s Old Town (Gamla Stan), while listening to tales of public executions, plague, and murder.
  • Learn about the Celtic festival of Samhain in Ireland and sink a pint at Dublin’s Gravediggers pub, named after the workers at the neighboring Glasnevin Cemetery, who often frequented this watering hole.
