Winter Adventures in Interlaken

Watched over by the intimidating peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, and within easy access of Alpine backcountry, the town of Interlaken is the perfect jumping-off point for a slate of outdoor winter activities. See below for some of the best winter adventures available in Interlaken.

Sled Rides
Sliding on a sled is one of the most exhilarating ways to navigate the mountain terrain. Sledders are brought up to higher elevations by cars or gondola, before careening down the slopes passing through snow-shrouded forests and meadows. For an extra sense of adventure, go sledding at night and zoom down the slopes under the light of the stars.

Seeing Jungfraujoch
Nicknamed the “Top of Europe,” this high-altitude saddle offers unbeatable views of the peaks and glaciers of Bernese Oberland. Access to the summit railway station at 11,330 feet (3,453 meters) is via a steep cog train, which runs year-round.

Skiing and Snowboarding
Skiers and snowboarders love the glittering white slopes of the Swiss Alps and count them among Europe’s top winter sports destinations. Beginners can opt for ski or snowboard lessons, during which an instructor will school them on the basics on the baby slopes of Grindelwald. More experienced winter sports enthusiasts can opt for a gear rental package, before hitting the slopes of Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Männlichen, or any of the other resorts within Switzerland’s Jungfrau region, independently.

Snowshoeing
If the thought of hitting the slopes doesn’t appeal to you, try snowshoeing instead. Trails lead across the white wilderness, through silent forests and to remote mountain hamlets, with the specially designed snowshoes making it easy to walk across the wintery terrain.
