Located in the southern part of the Malaysian peninsula about 2 hours from Kuala Lumpur, Malacca is the third-smallest state in Malaysia. Its capital city, Malacca City (Melaka), is also one of the oldest trading ports in the country, having experienced rule under the Portuguese, Dutch, and English. Thanks to its long and rich history that dates back for centuries, Malacca earned a designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. Popular sites to visit in Malacca City include Porta de Santiago (A Famosa Fort), churches, squares, and mosques - a testament to the area's various cultural influences. Some of the most well-known sites in the city include St Paul's Church on the hill the pink-hued Christ Church, culture-filled Portuguese Square, Jonker Street, and colored red Dutch Square, or Stadthuys There is also Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, which is the oldest temple in Malaysia, and nearby Kampung Kling Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in the country.
