Outdoor Adventures in Samana

The Dominican Republic’s Samana Peninsula is home to diverse terrain, steep mountains, beautiful beaches, and untouched national parks—making it a true destination for travelers in search of land- and water-based outdoor adventure. Here are some of our favorite outdoor activities to enjoy in this Caribbean gem.

Hiking
The natural beauty of the Samana Peninsula is on full display within El Limon National Park, a popular destination for jungle hiking. Rugged terrain through the lush rainforest leads to one of the Dominican Republic’s tallest cascades, El Limon Waterfall, plummeting some 180 feet (55 meters) into a deep pool, perfect for a refreshing swim after your hike.

Whale Watching
Each winter humpback whales journey from the North Atlantic to the warm waters of Samana Bay to birth their calves. With a marine biologist on board, head out into the Caribbean waters to spot these gentle giants. Whale watching tours often include a stop at Cayo Levantado (Bacardi Island) for swimming and snorkeling.

Ziplining
El Limon is home to one of the Dominican Republic’s top zipline parks, where adventurous travelers can cruise through the canopy along 10 cables running between 20 platforms. The bird’s-eye views of the Samana Peninsula on a lofty zipline adventure are hard to beat.

Deep-Sea Fishing
Troll for blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, and mahi mahi aboard a fishing charter from Samana. With the help of experienced guides and all the equipment you’ll need to make your big catch, head out to find your own dinner fresh from the waters of Samana Bay.
