Exploring Northern Namibia from Windhoek

Namibia’s sparse population, well-paved roads and incredible scenery make exploring the southern African nation a breeze—particularly for travelers who fly into the country’s capital, Windhoek.

Head out of town on the B1, where rocky hills and vast savannahs line the sides of a perfectly tarred road towards Okahandja and hang a right to Otjiwarango. During rainy season, the lush green of Waterberg Plateau makes for an impressive photo op, and during the drier months it’s worth a visit to scout out some incredible views and indigenous wildlife.

Nearby Africat and the Cheetah Conservation Fund offer up-close looks at Namibia’s favorite big cats. From either of these destinations, travelers can head west to Outjo and venture into the Kunene region, where Etosha National Park makes for the ultimate Namibian safari experience. Further north, in the town of Opuwo, travelers can interact with one of the Himba, one of the continent’s oldest tribes, making for a truly memorable cultural exchange.

Travelers who would rather head further north can bypass the trip west and instead venture towards Rundu, Namibia’s second-largest city. Located on the Okavango Delta, this bustling town lies just beyond traditional villages where locals live in mud huts and students learn in outdoor classrooms. Travelers can canoe in the river between Namibia and Angola while keeping watch for hippos, or wander the dusty roads that lead between a mall, petrol station, food stands, churches and rest camps. Those looking to go even further north, to the sliver of land known as Caprivi, can easily catch the Intercape coach bus en route to Katima.
