We signed up for this tour assuming that we would be given a guided tour of Salzburg and the Lake District. The title also implied that it was a Sound of Music Tour. The guide read to us from a script (verbatim) on the drive to Salzburg, given a few suggestions as to places we could visit, and then dropped off for a couple of hours with a map to guide us. We were told of a couple of locations where the Sound of Music was filmed around town, but were not shown anything personally. If we wanted to do Salzburg on our own, we would've taken the train. The drive to the Lake District was very pretty, despite the rain. We were given 45 minutes to walk around a cute, very small town before boarding a boat. The boat trip was advertised as being optional, but it was not. The "guide" came around to collect 13 Euros per person on the drive to Salzburg; we were not given any other option other than paying up to ride the boat. I guess the Sound of Music part of the tour was the soundtrack to the movie being played over the loudspeaker during the boat ride. This was a very disappointing tour.
We really enjoyed this tour! Our guide Hanni was so funny and quick witted. She kept us entertained throughout the whole trip.
The tour bus is a large Coach with comfy seats. One note - the laws here prohibit them from running the bus for a/c while waiting on people - so you may spend a few minutes in a hot bus while you wait for your fellow travelers to return from the restrooms!
Salzburg is phenomenally beautiful. We had about 30 minutes of tour with Hanni and then about an hour and a half to tour the city in our own.
The trip through the Lake District is lovely and the boat ride on the Wolfgansee was incredible!!!! The views are breathtaking.
The drive bsck took forever as the border control makes the traffic a nightmare.
All in all our family really enjoyed this tour. It allowed us to see two places in one day. Highly recommend!
Note!!!! Be back at the bus or the meeting places ON TIME! The company has instructed the guides to leave people behind if they have to in order to be on time for the boat ride. Hanni was very very specific about meeting times and locations - unfortunately there were a couple of travelers who wouldn’t or couldn’t follow instructions, and they were left behind.
I would have given 5 stars except for the fact that the company did not inform us ahead of time that we had to pay Hanni in Euros on the bus on the way to Salzburg, for the boat ride. We barely had enough cash as we thought we could pay with a credit card or get cash in Salzburg before we arrived for the boat ride.
the sights were great on paper as due to the rains, we neither saw the ALPS , Salzburg nor Wolfgansee in the way it was described to us on paper. The only highlight worth mentioning was MONICA WERNER, our guide who was splendid in her explanations .The company must relook at its policy and relook at pricing in case of bad weather conditions
Salzburg is amazing! The ride out was comfortable, and the tour guide was friendly and extremely knowledgeable. She gave us all a run-down of the most interesting parts of the city before letting us loose to poke around wherever we wanted. As I went in winter we did not actually visit the lake district, although it would have been freezing and probably not much fun anyway I'd love to go there in summer -- and I really enjoyed Salzburg, so probably not much of a loss.
The only real problem was with returning home: due to the old city ie within the fortress walls being tiny and the roads congested with tourists no doubt, the tour bus had to pick us up at one particular spot at a very exact point in time they're allowed to pick up/drop off passengers, but not to park for a longer period as other tours usually do. They gave us all maps of the city, including the departure point, but I mis-read the map, and was in the wrong street when the bus left. The good news is the train service between Germany and Austria is excellent, so I was able to get back to my hotel without much hassle. Ultimately this was my screw-up, but it'd be great if they could find a way to have a more forgiving departure schedule.
